Revitalized Medvedev Wins First Championship in Over Two Years
19 of Medvedev's twenty-one victories have been achieved on hardcourt
A comeback Daniil Medvedev won his first trophy for 882 days with victory over opponent Moutet in the competition final.
The athlete, a former world number one, has had a challenging period, winning just a single victory at the big events and suffering a meltdown at the New York tournament.
Medvedev's varied form on the ATP Tour - and struggles with his serving in specific - resulted in him falling of the world's top 10 and eventually separating with former mentor Gilles Cervara.
Presently training with his coach and Goetzke, Medvedev has gradually improved in the last few weeks - peaking in a hard-fought three-set triumph over Frenchman Moutet.
This marks his initial trophy since the Italian tournament and first on a hard court since spring of that year.
The win also signifies Medvedev has secured twenty-one championships at twenty-one different competitions.
"This marks the first occasion I am participating in a tournament with my children together, so to secure a championship is especially meaningful," said world number 14 the champion.
"This victory is in honour of my younger daughter her name, because the maiden victory I won when my child her name was born was for her."
Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his previous six finals, including in that event earlier this year.
His defensive approach and frequent emotional displays on court had prompted some to doubt if his skill to compete at the top level was concluded.
Yet the athlete has made changes in the last few weeks, striving to come to the net and compete assertively, reinforced by an better serving game.
The champion recovered from a break down in the opening set against the tricky Moutet, taking four of the concluding five exchanges to go ahead.
Both players traded break points in the second set before the Frenchman, attempting for his first ATP Tour title, took control to force a third set.
Moutet rescued four initial break points in a competitive third set before Medvedev secured a break to that score to serve for the match.
Suitably, Medvedev secured victory with a point at the net area, with his opponent incapable to control a volley after two hours and 38 minutes.
